Living well with dementia
With the onset of dementia, it’s common for people to experience lapses in their judgement, memory and cognitive ability. Often, people diagnosed with this condition experience restlessness and lose any desire to pursue their hobbies.
However, we think being diagnosed with dementia doesn’t have to mean giving up a fulfilling life, there are a number of steps you or your loved one can take to live as comfortably as possible with your diagnosis even during lockdown:
Adhere to a regular routine – To reduce the impact of memory loss, try to stick to a regular, consistent routine. It may take a couple of weeks to get in to the swing of things, but the longer you keep it up, the easier it will get! Displaying a personal timetable of your activities for the week in a central place you often walk past will also help you stay on track.
Make your home dementia friendly – To help you live at home comfortably, we recommend creating a system for storing important items in your home so you never lose them. Put your keys in a bowl by the door, or the TV remote on top of the telly, for example.
To avoid falls, consider painting contrasting colours between the wall and floor where possible. You may also want to remove as many rugs and mats from the floor too to make your space as easy to navigate as possible.
Socialise as often and as safely as possible – Although it’s more difficult to stay in touch with friends and family during lockdown, consider ringing or video calling when you can. There are a number of free, easy to use apps to help you stay connected.
It’s just as important as ever to stay active to slow the symptoms of dementia, although COVID will have had an impact on the dementia-friendly activities available near you. We recommend you or your loved one get in touch with your local council, or activity provider, to see how you’ll be affected, and what alternatives are available.
Seek support – If you find things are becoming too difficult, we recommend seeking the right support. Care and Support by ENS are able to provide a range of person-centred care packages for people with dementia. Whether your loved one just needs help around the house and someone to take them to their favourite activities or needs greater support in order to keep them safe we’re able to help. We’ve introduced a number of measures to ensure our service remains COVID-free, and safe for every individual we support.
